Dr Sara de Menezes is a Melbourne-trained specialist dermatologist who completed her dermatology training at several major hospitals including Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Royal Melbourne, St Vincent’s and Austin Hospitals. She completed a research Masters at the Victorian Melanoma Service investigating techniques in melanoma diagnosis.

Dr Sara was selected to complete a Fellowship in Mohs Micrographic Surgery through the highly regarded program at Oxford Dermatology and Day Surgery in Perth, Western Australia.

Mohs Micrographic Surgery

If you have a skin cancer on your face, scalp or neck then this procedure is ideal for you. Skin cancers below the knee or on the hands are also suited to this technique.

Mohs micrographic surgery will ensure you are able to have the smallest wound possible based on the type of tumour you have and therefore the best cosmetic outcome.

Dr Sara will discuss the best reconstructive option for your situation on the day, depending on the final wound size.

Mohs micrographic surgery was pioneered by Dr Frederick Mohs in the 1930s and is a highly technical form of skin cancer treatment. It allows for accurate removal of basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas to provide cure rates of up to 99% for previously untreated tumours and 94% for recurrent tumours.

The tumour is excised and examined under the microscope on the same day by Dr Sara. One hundred percent of the surgical margin is examined and once she is satisfied that there are no remaining tumour cells, the wound is repaired on the same day.
